Author: Glenn D. White
Average review score:

Never-fail reference
I almost always find the answer to my question when I look it up here. Clear definitions and explanations of even advanced concepts.

Glenn did a great job
Glenn D. White has taken the technical concepts and made them accessible to everyone.

"A Must Have"
I was a total beginner of sound engineering field when I bought this book. And this handy book helped me alot because I could find any technical terms I wanted to know in it and the definitions there are clear enough to understand even though I'm not a native English speaker. So, I recommend you to have this if you're beginners.

Basic MIDI

doubts
iwant with in 12 hours it is very urgent by nagamurali

1. What is difference between format 0 and 1 in standard MIDI File(SMF)? 2. Tell me about meaning about Delta Time in SMF Shortly. 3. Tell me about Data format in SMF as much as you know.(eg: Delta Time, header chunk, track chunk etc. note, control, exclusive, tempo etc.) 4. these are parts of SMF forms of each quarter note of "Do, Re, Me, Fa, Sol, Ra, Ti, Do", the 1th-octave musical note. Fill blanck with proper number. 48, 92h, 36, 100(Delta time, note-on, and midi-ch, note, velocity) 48,38,100 48,(40),100 48,( ),100 48,( ),100 48,( ),100 48,( ),100 48,(48),100

Good start for the clueless
For a total MIDI beginner, this is a very good intro. I am an old ex pro musician who hasn't done anything musical for over 20 years and decided to try my hand at doing something on my iMac. This little book describes the terminology, software, hardware, etc., requirements that a beginner should be expected to know about. It allowed me to take my next step without feeling totally ignorant. Very basic, just like the title says.

An excellent introduction to the MIDI world
I bought this book because I was keen to connect my PC to my keyboard but had no idea what I would need in the way of hardware or software. The book covers all the areas that you need to know about to get going in the MIDI world. The information is presented in a way that is neither too simplistic to be useful nor too complex to be off-putting. The style of writing made it possible to read the book from beginning to end and not just to use it as a reference, although the well defined chapters and comprehensive index make it very easy to find particular parts again.

This book has met my needs 100%.

A Big Cheese for the White House: The True Tale of a Tremendous Cheddar
Published in Hardcover by Dorling Kindersley Publishing (September, 1999)
Authors: Candace Fleming and S. D. Schindler
Average review score:

Yum, pass the crackers¿
In this true tale of a tremendous cheddar, Candace Fleming asks: "What weighs 1,234 pounds, stands four feet high, and is made from the milk of nine hundred and thirty-four cows?"

"Why, a giant cheese of course!"

When President Thomas Jefferson was serving Norton cheese at the White House, Elder John Leland suggested that everyone could help make a whopping big cheddar, a cheese so large that President Jefferson would be serving Cheshire cheese at the White House for years and years!

After gathering all the milk and making the cheese curds, they had to press the curds in an apple press. Finally they haul the cheese in a wagon to ripen in Elder John's barn. To get the cheese to President Jefferson's New Year's Day party, they have to put it on a sleigh and take it to Hudson, New York. Finally it sails down the Hudson River and is then carted on a sleigh to Washington.

Apparently, the cheese was served for years and someone said it lasted until 1805.

Just by the way, cheddar curds can't be beat. Give me the curds
instead of the pressed cheese any day!

Cute story for young cheese lovers.

If you love cheese, look for Paula Lambert's Cheese Lover's Cookbook & Guide. She explains how cheese is made and even includes recipes.

Great for Reading to Younger Children
I have read this book to my two grandsons (Brooks nearly 4 and Pierce nearly 3 yrs old) and their interest and response to this book has been fun and surprising. The story interests them and the art illustrates the story very well. They enjoy finding the characters from the story in the associated pictures. Phineas Dobbs' grumbling has become an inside family joke. The boys go around the house often repeating his comment, "I told you, it can't be done!" while placing their arms across their chest.

The book has provoked them to ask many questions which has proved to be a good teaching opportunity as well.

They read everytime before naptime and bedtime and they have insisted that this book be included each time for about three weeks now. I highly recommend this book for reading to children 3 years old and up.

Serve Cheese!
After reading this book aloud to my second grade class, I served up different kinds of cheese! The kids loved it (since their mouths were watering for cheese after listening and seeing Schindler's tasty looking illustrations!).An outstanding slice of obscure history! Editor Melanie Kroupa is an expert at delivering great, obscure stories from history (see STEAMBOAT by Judith Heide Gilliland).Outstanding storytelling!

Big Little White Lies
Published in Paperback by Nehmarche Publishing (15 May, 2001)
Author: Carol Chehade
Average review score:

A Must Read!!
This book covers every little nook and cranny white people try to hide under and exposes their issues in regards to race. I recommend this book to any white person who wants to truly heal the race problem in America and abroad.

this is the only book I would want White people to read
Although she claims to be a White woman, specifically an Arab American woman who has spent the majority of her life as an American, it is really difficult to consider Ms. Chehade as a part of a people she so staunchly accuses of bearing the majority responsibility of human oppression and subjugation. It is hard to associate her as part of "the problem" because she is so brutally honest in her assessment of race relations-an absolute rarity among those progressive Whites and even Blacks who are traumatized just having to think about the issue. One may be shocked that there are "liberal" whites, according to Ms. Chehade, who are just as racist as the typical Klu Klux Klan member. Throughout the book, Ms. Chehade includes herself in the many examples of the use of White privilege. Her unique perspective on how immigrants are acculturated into racism is especially insightful, particularly when she describes the symbiotic economic relationship immigrants have in Black communities.

No matter the level of participation Ms. Chehade had in these racial crimes, one can easily grant her immunity because she testifies to the evil of White denial of Black humanity. The book's overall point is that it is this very denial which is key to the problem, but also critical to any resolution of America's racial nightmare. "Big Little White Lies" does not lose focus in exposing this pathology. Ms. Chehade, directly talks to whites, exposing and then addressing their negative beliefs and behavior toward Blacks. She is relentless in placing the responsibility for healing on White people by pointing to the enormous amount of power only they command. For example, using her analysis of power as the ability to control people, resources, and institutions to the detriment of others, she exposes the paranoia Whites have of Minister Louis Farrakhan. It is only by reading this book will White people come to really understand what drives the Minister and may even thank the Creator for him.

This is the only book I would want White people to read if they are going to experience any Black History at all. Not only is it a concise treatise on the history of White oppression of Blacks, but more importantly, it shows how the evils of the past have accumulated to create negative consequences for Blacks in this time. Those interested in the movement for reparations for slavery should read this book not only for its value as a reference book on the pain and suffering inflected on Blacks, but as a tactical guide to the mind of White America.

In stripping away the most fundamental denials of White people, Ms. Chehade indirectly answers many of the questions Blacks have on why the majority of Whites are racist. On one hand, "Big Little White Lies" creates an overwhelming despair that brotherhood between the masses of Black people and White people is not only an impossibility in our lifetime, but a remote possibility in the lifetimes of future generations.

On the other hand, Carol Chehade opens the mind to the critical issue of power sharing in this society and the absolute necessity of self and group empowerment. No matter your position on the political spectrum, I guarantee that this book will leave you breathless and a little shaken.

My fear is that "Big Little White Lies" will never see the mainstream publishing success it deserves. No other book could claim to be remotely compared to it. No other book could have as much potential to heal.

One of the best books on racism
Chehade doesn't leave any sacred ground for racism to hide. She bravely contronts racism on every level. I loved her bluntness and her willingness to write about issues that so many people outside of the African American community do not see or want to deal with. She is no joke. People who are in any way interested in solving racism NEED to read this book and find out just exactly what kind of beast we are all living with.

Black Cat, White Cat: A Pop-Up Book of Opposites
Published in Hardcover by Little Simon (01 June, 1998)
Author: Chuck Murphy
Average review score:

A captivating book for a 1-yr-old cat lover
This is a great "opposites" book. The young-cat, old-cat transition is facinating to me, but my son loves the cat that leaps out at you (out-cat, in-cat). He laughed really hard as I had that cat pop out about 10 times in a row.

Now, if I want to get him to go into his room, I say "Black cat, white cat", and he heads straight for this book. He can barely say anything yet, but he loves this book!

FOUND at last!!
I saw this book in an educational toy store several years ago. I had no children at the time and put it back on the shelf; a few weeks later I returned to buy it just for me, but it was gone. Since then I've actually had a child who is now 18 months old, and I have seached many a book store shelf and even looked here on amazon before with no sucess. One bookstore recently told me it was out of print and could take several months to get. Now that I've found it here I'm ordering it immerdiately! And I urge anyone else reading this review to the same. It is an amazing little book!! You won't be sorry!

a charming introduction to opposites
"Black cat, white cat. Day cat, night cat .... "

Chuck Murphy has done it again, giving children and parents a little work of art disguised as a pop-up book.

Three manipulatives are fold-out, four are operated by tabs, and three automatically pop up with the turning of a page in this fun and creative introduction to opposites, each concept illustrated by felines. A delight for children and adults.

Blue Collar God / White Collar God
Published in Hardcover by W Publishing Group (01 October, 2001)
Author: Terry White Collar God Esau
Average review score:

"God Parachutes into 2001"
In "Blue Collar God" Esau airdrops God into our world, and the splash is significant. It soaked me, anyhow, in a good way. I loved this book!

Read it once, then again to your children
The best gift you can give yourself is to read this book out loud to children. Not only are they great stories to read, but like poetry they come alive and take on a new dimension when you hear them being read aloud. I suddenly found another layer to each tale as I read them to my 13 and my 16 year old son. We have given several of them to friends as Christmas gifts. When you read the book, you will know why. The author has a great folksy style, rich with symbolism.

Hardly typical
This is not your typical Christian book. It didn't feel or sound religious, but still hit hard. Stunning word pictures. Unique settings. Esau definitely strays outside the lines...I like that. This book is certainly worth your time and $s.

Book of the Hopi
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (June, 1977)
Authors: Frank Waters and Oswald White Bear Fredericks
Average review score:

Comprehensive and enjoyable
I truly enjoyed my time reading Book of the Hopi. It is low on cutesy Native "folk tales" and packed with actual information about Hopi clans, ritual, and migratory history. It walks you step-by-step through a series of ceremonies in striking detail.

I admit that I found Frank Waters writing style to be clinical at times, but the information he is presenting was interesting enough to overlook this.

By the time you are done with this book, I imagine there is very little you won't know about the Hopi.

Perhaps the Most Complete Compendium of Hopi Information
Frank Waters' excellent BOOK OF THE HOPI is probably the most complete collection of Hopi stories, language, rituals, and photographs in one place. Waters wrote this book with assistance from thirty-two Hopi elders back in 1963. Much time has passed since then, and while the way of the Hopi remains mostly unchanged, access to their sacred ceremonies and rituals has been greatly reduced in the last several decades.

While BOOK OF THE HOPI was written through the eyes and ears of an outsider, it contains much of the spirit of the Hopi, and countless fascinating insights. One such example is the explanation of how one sacred ceremony (the Ya Ya) was profaned and is no longer performed, since much of its powers were taken for evil. "When you receive a wonderful power and use it for evil you lose the power. You have to use it for good to keep it."

I love the richness of information contained in this little book: symbols, the tablets of the clans, a glossary of Hopi words, thrilling tales about the creation of the worlds, and detailed descriptions of sacred objects such as the Paho (prayer-feather). This attention to detail is marvelous, but it's the heart of BOOK OF THE HOPI that makes me feel at home with the Hopi and at one with their spirit.

I give this book my highest recommendation.

History and Culture of the Hopi
This book is my first exposure to the historical, spiritual and cultural history of the Hopi, both prehistoric and modern. A must read for anyone interested in the honorable traditions of the first American inhabitants whose history predates that of European biblical history, and how the introduction of the European has completely altered their ritualistic practices. This book has opened my eyes to a people whose lives are rich in dedication to the preservation of peace for all living entities on this planet and throughout the cosmos.

Who this book is not for is the UFOlogist, Hollow-Earth and Alien-Conspiracy theorists who believe the Hopi people have come from the purported middle-earth where an evil alien civilization still exist to this day. However, who this book is for are those who respect life as the Hopi respect life and who want to these peoples through the early migrations. From this book you will see that the Hopi have traveled throughout all of the Northern and Southern Americas, as well as Canada and the Artic polar regions long before the European traveled to these parts of the globe, and whose religious practices are older than that of any religion in the world. Where the Christian religion (through the teachings and historical records of the Bible) only know of two worlds the Hopi civilization have memories of four worlds, but both have records of the exact same destruction of the last world, i.e., its destruction by water. Also the Hopi are privy to the knowledge that we will face three more worlds.

I rate this book wonderful, enlightening, educational and spiritually edifying.

Brothers at War (White Mane Kids No 4)
Published in Paperback by White Mane Publishing Co. (March, 1997)
Author: Margaret Whitman Blair
Average review score:

Great Book!
I got this book for my b-day and I read it right away! This is a wonderful book about three teenagers who are swept back in history to the Civil War. Then they must learn to live like the people back then and each has there own part in the war. This book also teaches allot of facts about the Civil War that I never knew. I recommend it to anyone who loves to read and learn facts:)

Civil War fiction at its best
Ms. Blair tells an action-filled story filled with humor and suspense. I reccomend this book to any and all readers interested in Civil War reenactment or time-travel. The characters are believable and honest, the true indication of a worth-while read.

Superb!
This is a great book. I love it!!!!!!! The characters are really believable and funny. This author is much better than R. L. Stine.

Black, White, Just Right!
Published in School & Library Binding by Concept Books (October, 1993)
Authors: Marguerite W. Davol and Irene Trivas
Average review score:

Thankfully Avoids Patronizing Mixed Race Kids
This book remains one of the most consistently re-read books in my 6 year old daughter's substantial book collection. Thanfully devoid of the prevailing liberal viewpoint that you "are what society sees you as" the book calmly reinforces the concept that it is quite okay for mixed race children to celebrate their ENTIRE racial and cultural background.

Bi- Racial 4 yr old daughter LOVES to have this read to her
My 4yr old daughter loves to have this read to her. She used to identify with herself as I'm "BOTH" (black & white), now she says "she's just right too". It's so light and age appropriate, while touching on the differences and similiarities of others. I love that the diffrences that are pointed out in this book between the mommy and daddy are not stereotyped by a the like's or dislike's of the black/white race. Beatiful illustrations and catchy rhymes. A definete must get.

Lovely book
Simple text with rhyme and readable cadence makes this an enjoyable read for a preschool classroom. The little girl enjoys many things with her black mother and white father, AND has many tastes and interests of her own. A bi-racial girl in my class was immediately drawn to this story, as were other children who simply enjoyed the story.

Canoeing and Camping: Beyond the Basics
Published in Paperback by ICS Books (June, 1992)
Authors: Cliff Jacobson and Cliff Moen
Average review score:

excellent resource
from time to time we all have questions or are looking for confirmation on proper procedure/etiquette in camping. this book proved to be an excellent to me. although i consider myself somewhat experienced, it was refreshing to have several of my ideas confirmed by an expert. on the other hand, what was most valuable was the disproving of out of date camping policies that even the forest rangers havent updated on. a great example is bear proofing your camp. the author firmly disagrees with the traditional "tie it in a tree" procedure. a very good book for beginner to advanced campers/canoeists.

Great book!
I have been paddling for about twenty-five years. I picked up a copy of this book in a used book store and read it cover to cover. I think what moved me was the author's undeniable love of paddling. He states good sound wisdom without climbing on an all knowing soap box. Techniques, method and his own tried and true experiences shine thru. I love to learn new tricks in paddling and camping from my boat. This book is an asset to any paddler's library. I'm in the process of building a spray skirt from the plans provided within.

Amendment
I wrote an earlier review posted here and commented about Mr. Jaconson's references to his other books. I recently recieved an email from the author where he explained some of his reasons for doing so. Key among those reasons was the fact that he often had limited space available due to restraints set by the publisher and wanted to explain where more information could be found. While I still think the refrences can be slightly distracting I now understand Mr. Jacobson's reasons for doing so and thought I should share that information to be read with my previous review. I also noticed in rereading my previous review that it sounded much more harsh than I had intended. Let me be clear: this is an excellent book, well written and filled with great information, and I certainly would reccomend it. My complaint was and is a minor one and shouldn't keep you from purchasing this great book about camping and canoeing.
